It seems there is hardly a day goes by that one of the UK’s major retailers or food manufacturers has a product recall or alert for mislabeling of food under the newEU Food Information for Consumers Regulation, launched on 13 December 2014.  See more. So what chance do small restaurants and busineeses have when purchasing their ingredients from their local Cash and Carrys or Wholesalers . It strikes me that the food industry as a whole has a lot of work to catch up with clear and concise labelling.

Hairy Bikers Condiment Selection Withdrawn

Safety issue due to a labelling error

Kimm & Miller Ltd has recalled packs of Hairy Bikers Tasty Trio Condiment Selection with a ‘best before’ end of March 2016 because the product contains barley, eggs, milk, mustard and sulphites. These allergens are not mentioned correctly on the bottles, making the product a possible health risk for anyone with a relevant allergy, intolerance or sensitivity. This product has only been sold by BOOTS.

Chicken and Chorizo Paella Withdrawn

The Food Standards Agency report that the Co-operative has withdrawn packs of its Loved by Us Chicken and Chorizo Paella that contain wheat and prawns. These ingredients are not mentioned on the product label, which mean that the product is a possible health risk for anyone with an intolerance to gluten (wheat) and/or an allergy to prawns.

Every year, 5000 people with food allergies need hospital treatment for severe allergic reactions and 10 die from food-related anaphylaxis
Since December 2014, takeaways have had to join other types of food business in providing accurate information on the allergens in their food, but many are still failing to do so.
The 14 allergens are: cereals containing gluten, crustaceans, eggs, fish, peanuts, soybeans, milk, nuts, celery, mustard, sesame, sulphur dioxide/sulphites, lupin, molluscs.
